Adelson's wife Linda, who is vice
president and creative director of
Everything Goes, as well as head of
research, setup and pricing, helps him.
But Adelson said there are only
three criteria for evaluating an item:
condition, desirability at this time,
and quality. Added to that is, of
course, Adelson's experience, knowing
how much someone would pay.
"If you're looking at a piece of fur-
niture you say, 'Okay, it's made very
well, it's got a good signature on it, it
is really desirable today.' That gives
you your basis for pricing it. And if
you can't come up with those things,
f it misses any of those criteria, you
have to deduct from its value," said
Adelson.
If, for example, you had bought
frianish furniture 20 years ago, today
it would be worth very little. But had
you bought Queen Anne furniture in
mahogany or cherry 20 years ago,
today it would be worth five times
zvhat you paid for it. And there was
no difference in the cost between
Spanish and Queen Anne at that time.
When it comes to pricing antiques,
Adelson has tons of research material
aid auction records, all on his com-
puter. But he acknowledges that it
often comes down to having an eye to
recognize value and quality in an item.
Adelson is working up a package
that will allow individuals to try their
own sale. "I'll provide price guides,
marking stickers, proper marking pens
and sales books, and information on
'where and how to advertise along with
advertising guidelines."
He isn't concerned the package will
hurt his core business. "If someone
wants to do it themselves, they may as
'cell do it right," he said. He hopes to
have the package marketed nationally
within a year.
A hot area for Adelson has been
pre-demolition sales. That segment of
his business will probably continue to
g.-zow as land becomes less available
and people who want to build their
own style of house have to buy a par-
cel of land with an existing house on
it and tear it down.
Early on, Adelson decided to go
into this market and sell parts of hous-
es to the public.
He is talking serious recycling: win-
d9ws, doors, floors, ceilings, bathroom
fixtures, heating systems — everything
from architecture to woodwork. "My
houses are stripped completely, all
