his is the weekend that college
football fans have been wait-
ing for.
Michigan State vs.
Michigan.
This is a game that seemingly affects i i
everyone, regardless of your standing as
a student, alum or employee of either
institution. It doesn't even matter if you
are a football fan or not. Sides are cho- •io
sen.
Especially comical for me is that I
live in Ann Arbor. Not that I have much
against the city, except that I am a
proud graduate of Michigan State
ill
University, (THE university of
Michigan).
In my four years at MSU and the
almost six months since graduating, I
learned that U-M fans never give the .11
Spartans much credit or respect.
As MSU sits at 5-1 and are ranked
14th in the country in the ESPN/USA
Today Coaches Poll, they have obvious-
ly earned someone's respect. 11

A big misconception that U-M fans
try and convey is that-MSU is nothing
more then an in-state rival. "The Ohio *,
State game is much more important to -
us than playing you guys," a friend once
said to me.
My response was, "If you insist."
That was prior to the game at
Spartan Stadium on Nov. 2, 1995.
MSU turned U-M's pass defense into
something slightly less porous than a
sponge en route to a 28-25 come-from-
behind win.
All right, enough bantering.
State will win, plain and simple.
The home team has defended their
turf every year since 1992. Tomorrow's
game is in East Lansing, in front of
nearly 80,000-fans with a constantly
high volume.
Equally important to the game on
the field is the off-the-field rivalry
between the fans.
Pre-Game
Michigan alumni are impressive tail-
gaters. They go all out in the parking
lot of Crisler Arena with their full bars
