ferent kind of opportunity," he said.
Feltenstein said that 15 or 20 years
go, everyone was constructing free-
standing buildings on major roads. A
lot of those locations are taken now,
and it is off that paradigm that people
are saying the industry is saturated.
But our view of the business is that
we want to sell our food, our prod-
ucts, wherever people live, learn, work,
shop or play.
"So if you start with that, there are
gas and convenience stores, hundreds
and thousands of them, that want to
carry branded foods and upgrade their
operations. There are colleges and uni-
ersities that want branded foods.
There are truck stops, there are hospi-
als, there are office buildings and fac-
tories. There are a myriad of what we
call non-traditional points of distribu-
1,on where one can sell food," said

'And we've engineered our brand so
that we can retail it and sell our core
enu of hamburgers, hot dogs, french
ries, onion rings, root beer and root
eer floats in as little as 130 to 150
square feet. So it gives us enormous
flexibility to go into areas and to
places that heretofore branded foods
',aye not gotten into."

Detroit. "We're very anxious to really
-xpand our brand here. We have a
trong presence, but we think there's a
ot more room for us to grow. Our

What does it cost to get an A&W
, nchise? Anywhere from $100,000
loa $1 million, depending on whether
ou want a kiosk or a free-standing
estaurant, Feltenstein said. A&W's
finance subsidiary will even lend
money to qualified franchisees. The
Dyalty is 4 percent on sales and 4 per-
ent for advertising.
A&W's headquarters will soon be
aore visible locally. The company
gist broke ground on a site in
armington Hills at 12 Mile and
Ialstead.
Earlier this year, A&W acquired
75 stores from Carousel Snack Bars
I Minnesota that they are converting
o A&W Hot Dogs & More. Most
r the company-owned stores are in
mopping malls.
Feltenstein, who was born in New
)rk and grew up on Long Island,
immures to Livonia from Miami. He
is homes here and in Miami, where
