playmaking Krasimar Balakov
at midfield.
The Israelis sought to loosen
Bulgaria's grip through some
fast breaks, and nearly outwit-
ted the home side when Haim
Revivo got through two Bulgar-
ian center backs in the 19th
minute, but sent his shot
straight into the arms of goal-
keeper Zdravkok Zdravkov.
Eight minutes later, the Bul-
garians should have taken the
lead when Daniel Borimirov
was put through the Israeli de-
fense by captain Hristo Sto-
ichkov but fired wide with just
Rafi Cohen to beat.
Bulgarian coach Hristo Bonev
exchanged defender Ivailo
Petkov with Penev at the be-
ginning of the second half. The
addition helped Stoichkov, who
had a stinging header hit the
crossbar in the 51st minute.
Israeli midfielder Avi Nimni
began to take the ball deep into
Bulgarian territory with some
telling sorties down the left
flank.
Nimni found himself free in
the 53rd minute, but his shot
lacked accuracy and power.
Four minutes later he went
deep again, only to be upended
by fullback Trifon Ivanov.
The Bulgarians began to re-
gain some composure with the
59th minute introduction of
1994 World Cup hero Yordan
Lechkov. After further attempts
at goal by Revivo at one end and
Balakov at the other, Lechkov
engineered the winner with vir-
tually his first touch of the
game. Skirting down the right
he side-footed the ball to Emil
Kostadinov who backheeled a
return pass to Lechkov, who en-
tered the area then tucked a
perfect pass on to Penev who
fired into goal.
A minute later, the Bulgari-
ans lost Anatoli Nankov who re-
ceived a red card as a result of
a clash with David Amsalem.
Having nothing to lose, Coach
Scharf threw on strikers Ronen
Harazi and Alon Mizrahi in
place of Eli Ohana and the bat-
tered Felix Halfon. The injection
of attacking talent helped little
against the Bulgarians. The fi-
nal act of the match came with
the dismissal of Alon Hazan,
who collected his second book-
ing with a tackle on Zlatko
Yankov in the 89th minute. El
