Over lunch with the team, the

spirits. The game seemed so far
away from what they had just
gone through on the field. Even
Jodi Fox, the goalie who got

felt fine despite the spike marks.
Wednesday turned ugly as
well, but for a whole other rea-

rained out.
The girls beat Pittsburgh
again, 5-0 this time in an early
morning downpour. The early
lead let coach Larry Harwin stick
his goalkeeper in the field, and
put backup Stacey Raf in goal.
Raf did something unseen in soc-
cer, except when goal scoring.
She danced.
After sprawling to smother a
shot destined for the netting in-
side the far post, she booted the
ball upfield and celebrated.
While I missed the closing cer-
emonies, I was told the boys soc-
cer teams from Detroit and North
Jersey, the team that topped De-
troit for the gold, showed real
class and got along great despite
a pair of hard-fought games dur-
ing the week.
It only goes to show that if only
a fraction of the Detroit delega-
tion (myself included) can have
that much fun in a distant city,
imagine what can happen when
the whole delegation — let alone
much of the county and some in-
ternational guests — come to De-
troit for the JCC North American
Maccabi Games next year.
