Not often is sailing considered an
endurance event.
But last month's Port Huron to
Mackinac Island boat race was
long on endurance.
David Bennett, an 18-year-old
sophomore at Michigan State
University and resident of West
Bloomfield, was the bowman on
the boat "Wild Ride," which won
the PUBS Class E category of the
race in about 60 hours.
"It was my fourth race, but the
first crew I was on that won," he
said.
The boat had been scheduled
to run several races this summer,
and Port Huron to Mackinac
wasn't a planned event.
"The skipper had gotten in
touch with someone, who called
me and asked me to be on the
crew," Bennett said. "This crew
wasn't the regular one for the
boat."
The course took 'Wild Ride" up
the Canadian shore of Lake
Huron and around the Cove Is-
land light 120-150 miles north of
Port Huron. The course was 259
nautical miles.
"For a while, the second-place
boat was within a boat length,"
Bennett said. "Over the course of
three hours, we traded the lead
with that boat several times."
The main piece of sailing is get-
ting the most speed out of your
boat. Bennett, in his role as bow-
man, is responsible for the sail
changes.
The real dilemma for Bennett
took place before the race even
started.
Said his father, Mickey, "He
had a hard time deciding whether
to stay with Don Lang on the boat
he had been on before, or move to
the Wild Ride.' "
Bennett told Lang that if his
absence would keep his old team
out of the race, he would stay
loyal to the crew that groomed
him. ❑
