Image Changes
For Ottawa

HAROLD JACOBSON

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

As a former Ottawan who left
the city in the 1950s, this writer
returned for an extended stay in
Ottawa recently and discovered
that the Ottawa of old had been
radically altered in architecture,

cultural ambiance and the fine
arts.
Part of this transformation was
effected by the ambitious Greber
Plan, which used federal moneys
starting in the 1950s to initiate
bold building plans to encompass
the entire capital region.
The National Gallery on Sus-
sex St. has become one of the
›, world's magnificent conservato-
ries of art. A highlight if its
modern wing is a Chagall corner
with two of the French painter's
masterpieces including his famous
Me and the Village.
The War Museum is next to
the National Gallery; the Muse-
um of Civilization is across the
bridge as well as the Photography
Museum and the Mint. These
`— institutions are within a half mile
radius of Ottawa's War Memor-
ial and parliament buildings.
In the past, only the Parlia-
mentary Library provided the
kindof research-oriented materi-
als of interest to scholars. Today,
the National Library offers a large
range of facilities including
lectures, art exhibitions and
special displays. The library also
houses, in one of its rare book
rooms, the Jacob Lawry Judaica
book collection of more than 3,000
volumes from the beginning of the
age of printing to the 19th centu-
ry. The collection consists of rare
Hebrew bibles, biblical commen-
taries in diverse languages,
Jewish legal treatises, editions of
Maimonides' philosophical works
and a selection of Karaite (a 9th-
century Jewish sect) literature.
The A.J. Friedman Department
Store, which once dominated the
city, was given to the Bay. The
Byward Market with its open-air
stalls for fruit and vegetable
vendors is still in existence, but it
has been thoroughly modernized.
The market's administration
building off Williams St. has a
group of photographs on its exte-
,- nor walls showing what the
market looked like from the
beginning of this century to
the 1960s — before it became
gentrified.
The famous Union Station has
been transformed into a capacious
government convention center.
More recent changes have gut-
ted the former Jewish and
French-Canadian neighborhoods
/-- on Murray, Friel and Chapel
streets, leaving in their place
low- rise housing and apartment
buildings.
