Dr. Giles, Salman Sesi
Cited By Friends Group
The American Arabic and Jew-
ish Friends of Metropolitan De-
troit, a program of the Greater
Detroit Interfaith Round Table,
will honor Dr. Conrad Giles and
Salman T. Sesi at its 11th an-
nual dinner 6 p.m. Thursday,
June 19, at the Troy Marriott.
The honorees will receive the
Community Service Award.
Dr. Giles is national president
of the Council ofJewish Feder-
ations and former president of
the Jewish Federation of Met-
ropolitan Detroit. He co-chaired
Michigan's 1993 Miracle Mis-

of the Jewish Federation's Fred
M. Butzel Memorial Award for
Distinguished Community Ser-
vice. An ophthalmologist spe-
cializing in the treatment of
children, he was instrumental
in the creation of the Michigan
Israel Cornea Connection, a pro-
gram in which donors supply
corneas for transplants in Israel.
Mr. Sesi is an attorney who
came to Detroit in 1950 after re-
ceiving his law degree from the
University of Baghdad Law

tor from the Detroit College of

both Arabic and Aramaic and

sues.
Mr. Sesi serves on the boards

Proceeds from the dinner are

ships for graduating high school
seniors of Arabic and Jewish de-
scent who participate in an es-
say contest. This year, the
contest teamed Arabic and Jew-
ish students and scholarships
are being awarded to students
whose winning essays ad-
dressed the questibn, "As stu-
dents of American and Jewish
descent, what activities and pro-
grams with recommendations
for their implementation, do you
propose to promote greater un-
derstanding and cooperation be-
tween your respective ethnic
groups?"
