Like a good neighbor. State Farm is there.

"My focus was on my wrist
and elbow because I wanted to
be able to work. But because my
\i
posture was corrected and my
body is back in balance, the pain
from a neuroma in my foot went
away after about two months. So
did that hip pain.
"This is the best I've ever felt."
Howard Berlin, 43, experi-
enced similar improvement af-
ter being told by a neurosurgeon
that he needed surgery on a her-
niated disk that had forced him
to give up roller hockey and bas-
ketball.
"Results were pretty much in-
stantaneous," said Berlin, who
owns a San Diego security firm.
"I'm back to 95 percent now af-
ter starting last fall."
Like Brown, Berlin is in the
maintenance phase these days,
doing his routine in his home af-
ter an initial six-week program
with a therapist. Each session
with a therapist is $75 after a
$90 evaluation.
In some cases, with a medical
doctor's referral, medical insur-
ance may cover some of the ex-
pense, Carey said.
Function First's approach is
similar to the Egoscue Method,
a form of training and therapy
devised by Pete Egoscue, founder -
of THE (Therapy, Health & Ed-
ucation Clinic), where Carey for-
merly was director of education.
"With Function First, we work
more with the position of the
head, which is determined by the
receptors in the neck — with the
feedback it gets from the inner
ears and eyes," Carey said.
In any case, it's a far cry from
conventional, hands-on physical
therapy.
There's also a recreational and
physical training component to
Function First: the Adventure
Workout Club.
Groups meet Wednesday
evenings and Sunday mornings
to negotiate an obstacle course
designed to enhance fitness and
balance while engaging a vari-_,
ety of muscle groups.
"We work on explosive
strength, range of motion and
balance," Carey said. "It's the
next level, after you've gone
through the process of eliminat-
ing pain."
Included in the weekly work-
outs: crawling, hopping, skipping
and jumping. ❑
