offer an alternative or adjunct to
conventional physical therapy
by designing individualized pro-
grams that target the cause in-
stead of the symptoms.
In this case, it's all hands (be-

"We don't stretch and manip-

A former athletic trainer with
a master's degree from San
Diego State University in ath-
letic training and biomechanics,
Carey is director of therapy de-
velopment at Function First Inc.
Since opening in January
1996 near San Diego, Function
First has dispatched profession-
als to clients throughout the
country, most of whom share a
common problem: chronic pain
or injury that impairs function.
"If you come to us with back
pain, we won't give you exercis-

Our Commitment To Jewish
Tradition Continues.

Although Nve ' re now part of the area's largest
health system, we haven't lost sight of our
dedication to Jewish traditions. Which is ‘why
we continue to observe religious holidays,
offer rabbinical service, as well as maintain
Sinai's kosher kitchen. What's new is the fact
that The Detroit Medical Center is expanding
these practices, especially at Huron
Valley-Sinai Hospital.

that are underused because of

For Maureen Brown, a 47-
year-old director of franchise pro-
grams and services for
Jazzercise Inc. in San Diego, that
means 20 minutes each morn-
ing of simple strengthening ex-
ercises.
The movements, prescribed
by a Function First profession-
al, are designed to provide her
with the strength and postural
integrity to avoid the chronic
carpal-tunnel syndrome and hip
and foot pain that had made
both work and working out an
ordeal.
"My wrists were so weak I
couldn't get in a position on my
hands and knees for 10 seconds
at first," she said. "Now I do it for
two minutes a day.
"My whole right side was out
of alignment; one shoulder was
about three inches lower than
the other."
Told that lifting weights
would only aggravate the prob-
lem, likely only building strength
in her already-strong side, she
was given a sequence of exercis-
es to balance the body.
"Dang it if didn't work," said
Brown. 'The results were almost
immediate (after an initial 90-
minute evaluation). I did a six-
week program, an hour with a
therapist one day a week.
