This is espe-
cially true in this
case, though, be-
cause not only is

his own touches
to others' poetry,
he's working

ed to a Nazi con-

These poems
are, for many, almost sacred,
and the music doesn't do them
justice. It's not especially mem-
orable and, unfortunately, at
times is almost tedious.

There are two new beautifully
illustrated works that focus on
nature, with a Jewish twist.
A Prayer for the Earth tells
the story of Naamah, who
saves all the plants and trees as
Noah works to gather animals
before the flood. The text is
nicely worded, though it has

that whole "women's spiritual-
ity" feel to it that can become
tiresome. For example, when
Noah sends a bird to check for
dry land, the creature balks.
But when Naamah asks, in a
gentle and loving voice ("Do
not be afraid. It is God who
has chosen you to be a mes-
senger), the bird of course
flies away.

The Never-Ending Green-
ness by Neil Waldman (Mor-
row Junior Books, 1997).

The Never-Ending Greenness
is the story of a boy born in
Vilna who plants a tree which
develops into a grove in Eretz
Yisrael. The Van Gogh-like il-
lustrations are colorful and do
a wonderful job of giving a
real feel to the scene, especial-
ly in one picture where the
boy and his mother sit looking
over the hills. Inevitably, the
language becomes a little stilt-,
ed when it comes to religious
matters (though his mother
covers her hair, the boy refers
to Shabbat as "Saturday"), but
otherwise this is a pleasant
book.
