Annual Commodore's Ball
Opens Another Great Lakes Season
A
s the commodores from oth-
er yacht clubs in Michigan,
Toledo and Windsor were
announced when they
walked into the dining room
with their ladies, the tradition-
al ritual couldn't help but bring
back memories.
The membership today of
Great Lakes Yacht Club, says
Commodore Rod Faudem (who
led the club in 1996), is about 74
percent Jewish and 26 percent
non-Jewish.
But it wasn't always like this
... Far from it ... When Great
Lakes Yacht Club first opened
its doors 45 years ago, there
were only Jewish members ...
and with a reason.
These were boaters who, be-
cause of their religion, were
barred from joining other yacht
clubs.
This is when guys like Avern
Cohn, Howard Sherman, Bob
Winsen, Bill Gold, Milt Jaffe,
Dick Kanner, John Mayer, Mel
Rosenhaus and Irvin
Yackness went out in
May of 1952 and got
their own small, five-
boatwell yacht club, call-
ing it Island Boat Club,
near Waterworks Park
on the Detroit River.
Mel Rosenhaus be-
came its first president
in '52.
When a better, more
permanent location was
needed, the club leased
its present location on
Jefferson, off Nine Mile.
After applying for
membership in the De-
troit River Yacht Asso-
ciation, Great Lakes
Yacht Club was finally
given membership ...
nine years later.
Around 174 merry-
makers attended the
recent 45th annual
Commodore's Ball ...
honoring 1997 Com-
modore Rudi Straus
and wife Bette.
A more appropriate place
could hardly have been selected
than Mac & Ray's in Harrison
Township, with its inside look of
a huge yacht and boating deco-
rations everywhere ... Even the
carpeting has steering wheel de-
signs, and simulated boats are
on ballroom light fixtures.
The only boat I ever had was
one that floated in the bathtub
when a little kid, so it was a plea-
sure and much to my benefit
that no one at the table did any
mariner talking ... Arlene and

Although the percent-
age is about 74/26 as per
Rod, every member
knows that the Great
Lakes Yacht Club, he
says, is a Jewish organi-
zation ... No Christmas
decorations, no Easter
egg-rolling Shabbat
dinners held yearly for
members and families,
etc.
The Jewishness of
Great Lakes Yacht Club,
says Rod, is very
adamantly upheld.
