Ed's wife Juliette, their son
Mark, the expertise of Golden
Mushroom's fine general man-
ager, Kevin Frantz ... and so
many others.
Following a reception in the
Mushroom Cellar downstairs,
with bruschetta, calamari vinai-
grette and Galestro Antinori
1995, it was up to the main din-
ing room for confit of duck mine-
strone and Jermann Pinot Grigio
1995; lobster with potato gnoc-
chi and Jermann Dreams 1994;
grilled quail stuffed with white
truffle risotto, braised red cab-
bage and portobellas, and Castel-
lo di Ama "San Lorenzo" Chianti
Classico Riserva 1990; veal steak
saute wrapped in pancetta, with
black peppercorn and olive
sauce, angel hair pasta with sun-
dried tomatoes and Castello
Banfi Brunello di Montalcino
Poggio all'Oro Riserva 1990; gor-
gonzola with roasted peppers
and olive oil and Aldo Conterno
Barolo "Cicala" 1990; tiramisu
and Antinori Vinsanto 1991; and
coffee.
The next afternoon, Reid gave
a part of his Golden Mushroom
and Kevin's supervision to trum-
pet Variety,
The
Chil-
dren's Chari-
ty Cash For
Kids program
... as Kroger,
Farmer Jack
and Foodland
affiliated independent stores
merge with some of America's
top food manufacturers.
Everybody benefits from the
program ... stores, brokers, man-
ufacturers, consumers ... and the
children with special needs.
Think of all the unfortunate
kiddies you'll be helping every
time you use those coupons that
will be available this summer.
Attendees enjoyed a wonder-
ful lunch, compliments of Reid
... hors d'oeuvres (pate, smoked
salmon, gulf shrimp, wild mush-
rooms saute in filo); Golden
Mushroom or chicken vegetable
soup, Caesar or house salad,
choice of grilled breast of chick-
en with fruit and ginger glaze,
with almond rice; Canadian
whitefish saute with almond
crust chardonnay and citrus
sauce; or skillet steak saute
Velez with mashed potatoes and
vegetable.
The Golden Mushroom has al-
ways been very good ... but after
25 years, it seems to have gotten
even better.

THE GUEST Mystery
Muncher Writes:
"Larry Fox, son of realtor Ros-
alie Fox and Dr. Allan Fox,- is
owner of DeLuca's in Riviera
Beach, just over the bridge from
Singer Island in Palm Beach
County, Fla.
"Italian meals are served at
inexpensive prices, with many
of the recipes still remaining
from when DeLuca's there orig-
inally opened in 1967.
"Larry is a native Detroiter,
attended West Bloomfield High
and graduated in 1984. He mar-
ried his wife Martha at Temple
Israel in 1992.
"Four years ago, Larry pur-
chased DeLuca's in Riviera
Beach.
"On opening the door to DeLu-
ca's, the aroma of fresh garlic
and hot pizza fills the air. The
restaurant is small, seating only
40, and inviting as Larry's
waitstaff runs around with fresh
garlic rolls hot from the oven.
"The dough is made from
scratch daily, cut and twisted
into rolls and baked in the oven
at 650 degrees. The hot rolls are
then brushed with oil and fresh
garlic, and aged
Romano cheese is
sprinkled on top.
Servers keep bas-
kets full through-
out the meal.
"DeLuca's
menu features
classic Italian dishes, including
pizza, pasta and Parmesans. All
chicken is boneless and skinless
breast. Veal is cut scaloppini-
style, and tenderized by hand
just prior to cooking. Eggplant is
sliced and layered between pa-
per towels for a full day to re-
move all bitterness, before being
cooked.
"Clams are served whole in
the shell for traditional linguini
and clam sauce, choice of red or
white. Shrimp are all butterflied
and served tail-on' style.
"Plus dishes like garlic chick-
en sauteed in imported Italian
olive oil, with fresh garlic, white
wine and butter; veal scaloppini
sauteed in olive oil with fresh
mushrooms, white wine, red
wine, butter and garlic; veal
marsala sauteed in olive oil with
marsala wine and fresh mush-
rooms; pastas that make a big
hit with diners, both vegetarian
and otherwise. Pizza is a favorite
at DeLuca's.
"From your table, you can see
Larry hand-tossing the dough,
making the pizzas and putting
them into a large deck oven us-
ing a 5-foot pizza shovel.
"DeLuca's in Riviera Beach is
one of the few places that still
makes its pizza sauce with fresh
basil and fresh garlic.
. "But Larry's restaurant is
noted more for its veal, chicken
and pasta dishes."
"It is truly in the Italian sense
of dining." ❑
