regret, but the one thing that I'd
like to improve. Because I only
go to school a half-day to accom-
modate my skating schedule, I
really don't get to meet as many
people, or be as close with some
of them as I might want to be."
"I always wonder what it
would be like if I was a normal
kid, because there are things
that I miss out on and some
things I wish I could do."
At times she's considered
dropping skating and living what
she terms a "normal" lifestyle.
"It's hard to keep yourself push-
ing at the rate we do. It's really
hard at times because we don't
have anything that's a real off-
season.
Nevertheless, she continues.
"I'm hoping that in the long
run it'll all even out. Right now,
I'm just staying motivated by
watching some of the people
ahead of me, like Liz (Punsalan)
and Jerod (Swallow), and Todd
(Eldredge) and Tara (Lipinski)"
— all DSC skaters who've won
U.S. or world championships.
"And my friends at the rink
help a lot. They make me realize
that what I have is really great."
Chalom, who finished second
with partner Matthew Gates in
senior dance at the U.S. Nation-
als and 17th at the World Cham-
pionships in March, "is one of my
best friends," Silverstein says. "I
talk to her a fair amount. She's
helped a lot because at one point
I was having partner troubles
and she helped a lot with that ...
"Whenever I have a bad day
there's always someone at the
rink to give me a hug and talk to
me, which is good."
Silverstein and Pekarek will
remain at the junior level for at
least one more season. They hope
to qualify for the 1998 World
Championships. Eventually,
they plan to move up to the se-
nior level and hope to qualify for
OLYMPIC page 76
