With little insulation from body
fat, thin people tend to welcome
cold weather with the enthusi-
asm of a vegetarian ordering filet
mignon.
Now comes evidence that
cold's numbing discomfort can be
compounded by a physiological
phenomenon: a rise in blood
pressure: -

ies are the least insulated," ex-
plained Dr. Michael Weber, an
editor of the American Journal
of Hypertension, the publication
of the American Society of Hy-
pertension.
The mechanism in compensa-
tion often is a rise in blood pres-
sure.
A study by Israeli researchers
published in a recent issue of the
journal followed 101 healthy men
between the ages of 28 and 63
with normal blood pressure.
"The researchers found that
35 percent of the men in the low-
est weight group experienced
blood-pressure increases of at
least 10 (numerical units) from
summer to winter," said Weber,
who pointed out that 8 percent
of the men in the highest weight
group experienced a similar in-
crease in blood pressure.
The climatic conditions ex-
amined in the study represent
temperatures to which Israeli cit-
izens are normally exposed, and
are not extremes of heat or cold.
"Physicians should be aware
that an increase in blood pres-
sure in their thin hypertensive
patients could be attributed to
the season and not to a lack of
medication or treatment effec-
tiveness," Weber said.
