That sounds good in theory,
but Igor Gamow, a professor of
chemical engineering at the Uni-
versity of Colorado at Boulder,
says the key is not where you
work out but where you live.
"Live high and train low is the
way to go," says. Gamow, who
claims it's more effective to sleep
at high altitude and work out at
sea level.
With that in mind, Gamow in-
vented the High Altitude Bed, an
8-foot-long sleeping chamber that
imitates the reduced air pressure
of high altitudes. He says that
sleeping in the bed just six hours
a day (more high-altitude sleep-
ing isn't necessarily more effec-
tive) will give athletes enough
exposure to reap the benefits
when they train at sea level.
The glitch in the fitness club's
special room, according to
Gamow, is that exercisers can't
spend enough time there to
make it worthwhile. Elite triath-
letes and cyclists, including Iron
Man champ Greg Welch, are
among the athletes who have ex-
perimented with Gamow's in-
vention, but it's doubtful the
average weekend warrior will
want to install one at home. ❑

Contraceptive
Used For Acne

The Food and Drug Adminis-
tration has cleared the low-dose
contraceptive Ortho Tri-cyclen
for marketing as a treatment for
acne in adult women. This is the
first time birth control pills have
been cleared for noncontracep-
tive treatment.
The American Academy of
Dermatology estimates that 40
percent to 50 percent of adult
women suffer from some form of
acne, and the severity of acne
symptoms varies throughout the
menstrual cycle. Hormones,
stress and heredity are top caus-
es of acne, and while an oral con-
traceptive can't do anything
about stress and heredity, it can
decrease the level hormones
that cause annoying pimples,
blackheads and whiteheads.
Women may also appreciate
the other positive side effects of
low-dose contraceptives, in-
cluding reduced cramping, in-
creased menstrual regularity
and decreased menstrual flow.
However, the use of oral con-
traceptives should be discussed
with a doctor since adverse side
effects range from unpleasant
(nausea, weight gain, migraine)
to serious (hypertension, gall-
bladder disease, etc.). Oral con-
traceptives also are not
recommended for women with
pre-existing conditions, such as
coronary artery disease. ❑
