SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

While secular and religious resi-
dents of the Upper Galilee share
air raid shelters when Katyusha
rockets are falling, in normal cir-
cumstances they seldom share an
afternoon or evening together.
Now, however, things are be-
ginning to change thanks to a
growing dialogue between the
two groups in the area.
This welcome development
was evident last week, when re-
ligious and secular families spent
several hours on a joint tour of the
Hulah project. And though some
cars had stickers stating "Hebron
has always been ours and will re-
main so," while others displayed
"Peace Now" slogans, this didn't
prevent the participants from en-
joying the get-together.
Among those responsible for
initiating the discussions was
Hana Manne, an Orthodox Eng-
lish immigrant who is Chief Psy-
chologist in the Psychiatric
Department of Safed's Sieff Hos-
pital. Though Hana long enjoyed
cordial relations with her non-re-
ligious colleagues, she always
avoided discussing controversial
issues with them lest the result-
ing disagreements undermine
their friendship.
"But after the Rabin assassi-
nation," she says, "I felt that this
`head in the sand' approach was
no longer tenable, that contro-
versial issues had to be addressed
and misunderstandings ironed
out." Her secular friends agreed,
and enthusiastically cooperated
in the establishment of a reli-
gious-secular discussion group
that has subsequently met at var-
ious places in the Upper Galilee.
Participants read and ana-
lyze classic texts with relevance
to contemporary dilemmas ; and
then confront those dilemmas
from their own particular view-
point.
At the first meeting, held in
Kiryat Shmoneh, they discussed
an introduction to the Book of
Genesis written by Rabbi Naph-
tali Zvi Yehuda Berlin. In it
Rabbi Berlin points to the dam-
age that was done by men who,
though observant, were guilty
of sinat hinam (baseless ha-
tred), as the result of which the
Second Temple was destroyed.
This moved on to a discussion
of possible conflicts between
democracy and halachah, or
Jewish law, with some of the
secular participants expressing
the fear that democracy is this
country might be subordinated
to halachah.
That in itself is an achieve-
ment in today's sharply divided
Israeli society. ❑
