WINTER GETAWAYS FOR 1997

which placed them on a lower lev-
el of India's caste hierarchy. They
were known, in Hindi, as "Shan-
war tells" — literally, "Sabbath
oil-pressers." And the Bene Israel
earned that designation precise-
ly because they would not and did
not press oil or perform any oth-
er work on the Sabbath. Visitors
may meet some older members of
the community who are still press-
ing the oil — but never on Satur-
day!
Tour participants will be re-
ceived warmly, and they will note
that the mezuzzah on the door-
post of each home they enter has
been made in the tradition ofEx-
odus. Not metal or wood or ce-
ramic but a bloody palm print
marks Jewish identity. The palm
print is renewed every year, at
Passover, when the individual
householder dips his hand in the
blood of a lamb and thus refresh-
ens the mezuzzah mark on his
doorpost.
The visit to the Bene Israel
cemetery and villages is one of the
highlights of a two-week program
which includes attendance at the
200th anniversary celebration of
Shaar Rachamin, the first Bene
Israel synagogue in Bombay; a po-
etry reading by Nissim Ezekiel,
India's Jewish poet laureate; and
a meeting with Shri Poddar, a
Hindu swami and historian who
has done extensive research on
the millennia-old connection be-
tween Hinduism and Judaism.
In New Delhi, the Indian capi-
tal, tour members will attend ser-
vices at Judah Hyam synagogue
— whose chazan is Joshua Ben-
jamin, one of India's leading ar-
chitects, as well as the designer of
the Bene Israel cemetery memo-
rial.
There will be a visit to the Taj
Mahal, nearby in Agra — and, fi-
nally, to the famed Paradesi Syn-
agogue in "Jew Town" (Old
Cochin), on the southwest Mal-
abar coast. Visitors will see the
original copper plates, dating from
379 CE, according to some histo-
rians, which designate a certain
Joseph Rabban as the head of a
tiny Jewish kingdom.
"India Through Jewish Eyes,"
Dec. 18-Jan. 3, will be led by Rab-
bi Marvin Tokayer, formerly spir-
itual leader of the Tokyo Jewish
community and, in that capacity,
also the peripatetic (and only) rab-
bi of a vast area which stretches
from the Indian Ocean to the Chi-
na Sea.
The cost of the tour is $4,945.
It includes all air, land and sea
transportation, five-star hotels,
all meals and all kosher or Hindu
vegetarian — neither meat nor
eggs nor dairy products — and all
other services and amenities.
