near the present-day Bombay. A
handful of the passengers strug-
gled to shore the following
day, when the bodies of their ship-
mates were washed up and on to
the beach, buried them.
From Bombay, the first desti-
nation in the two-week "Jewish
Eyes" two-week tour, participants
will journey by ferry to a cemetery
at the presumed landing site and
recite kaddish for the victims of
the ancient tragedy. Amidst the
tombstones of a later period, some
400 years old, stands a six-point-
ed granite monument. With in-
scriptions in Hebrew, English and
Hindi, it commemorates the his-
toric event.
Returning to Bombay, the trav-
elers will pause to meet with Jews
in one or another of the five vil-
lages in which descendants of the
original settlers — they call them-
selves the Bene Israel — main-
tain Jewish life and worship.
There is a small synagogue in
each village; and, such is the hu-

freshly-painted stucco walls are
constantly peeling.
Until recent years, the Bene Is-
rael worked primarily as pressers
of cottonseed oil, an occupation

communities in India — a minis-
cule 6,000 Jews amidst a popula-
tion of more than 800 million —
is fairly well known by sophisti-
cated travelers; less well-known,
however, is the existence of tiny
Jewish communities along India's
west coast which have endured
for more than 2,000 years. A vis-
it to them is one of the highlights
of "India Through Jewish Eyes."
Like the Pilgrims who crossed
the Atlantic in search of religious
freedom, a band of devout Is-
raelites crossed the Indian Ocean
more than 16 centuries earlier —
with the same objective. Fleeing
the persecution of the Greek over-
lord, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, in
the second century BCE, the
refugees took the familiar pepper-
and-spices route from Eilat to In-
dia which the merchant fleet of
King Solomon had developed in
the 10th century BCE.
According to the Indian Jewish
historian, H.S. Kehimkar, the
refugee ship was wrecked by
