Two Museums,
One Major Goal

LEWIS ERIC LACHTER

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Two recently opened museums
prove once again that Jews have
a strong sense of where we came
from, where we are and where we
are going.
One museum is in Los Ange-
les-, the other is across the Unit-
ed States in Atlanta. Both sites
do the Jewish people proud and
send a powerful, positive message
to the rest of the world.
The California museum is
called the Skirball Cultural cen-
ter, and you.need a car to get
there. You have to navigate the
San Diego Freeway and get off at
the Sepulveda exit. Moshe Saf-
dioe, the Israel-born architect
who designed the center, said,
"The assumption is that nobody,
but nobody will ever walk to the
museum."
But once you get there, you
will see why the Skirball is con-
sidered to be one of the three top
Jewish museums in the world
(the other two are the Israel Mu-
seum in Jerusalem and the Jew-
ish Museum in New York).

The Los Angeles museum's
broad reach includes the ancient
history of Judaism, the disper-
sion and a brief view of the Holo-
caust and the birth of the State
of Israel. One of the many special
qualities of the Skirball is its love
affair with the American Jewish
experience.
Dr. Uri Herscher, president of
the cultural center, said, "We
have Holocaust centers; we have
Israel-oriented centers. The Skit--
