Hosts Speaker
Music Study Club will honor
Smokier family members Ned
Smokier, David Smokier and
Lynn Master for the establish-
ment of the Ida K. Smokier
Memorial Fund for Composition
3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the
Birmingham Temple.
Featured speaker at this 25th
year anniversary will be former
scholarship recipient Dr. James
Hartway, professor of music at
Wayne State and director of
composition and theory; his top-
ic will be "How Composers Com-
pose."
Dr. Hartway has recorded,
choreographed, and performed
world wide and has received
awards from the Michigan
Music Teachers Association,
Arts Foundation of Michigan,
ASCAP, WSU Board of Gover-
nors and has a lifetime mem-
bership in the Academy of
Scholars.
The social hour will begin at
2 p.m. and non-members are

Talks Given
In recognition of Unity Shabbat,
the Sholem Aleichem Institute
will sponsor a discussion on
"Four Points of View in Secular
Humanist Judaism" 8 p.m. Fri-
day, Oct. 25, at Franklin Pointe
Clubhouse.
Participants will be: Caroline
Borman, president of Birming-
ham Temple; Arlene Frank,
member of both the local and
national governing boards of
Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring;
Alan Kaufman, chairman of the
board of the Jewish Parents In-
stitute; and Irving Panush, a
vice president of the Sholem
Aleichem Institute.

ney Michael Berry, a pioneer in
Arab-American community re-
lations in metro Detroit, and
John F. Smith Jr., chairman,
president, and CEO of General
Motors Corporation at its an-
nual Brotherhood Dinner 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dear-
born.
Mr. Berry and Mr. Smith will
receive National Human Rela-
tions Awards from the Round
Table for their leadership and
contributions to the communi-
ty.
