ball is designed to tell the story
of how Jewish traditions, values
and vision intersect so closely
with the fabric of American life."
The museum's vast, perma-
nent exhibition includes a gallery
devoted to the meanings and
utensils of the Jewish holidays.
Like most displays in the Skir-
ball, this one assumes only very
basic knowledge of Judaism and
is interesting to the thousands of
blacks, Hispanics and Asians
who have poured through the
doors since the museum opened
in April 1996.
The Life Cycle Gallery features
interactive video to teach Jewish
customs and rituals of birth, mar-
riage and death.
In the child-friendly Discovery
Center, amateur archaeologists
of all ages can dig through geo-
logical time, view sections of a tel
and an ancient shaft tomb.
Another gallery presents the
immigrant experience in graph-
ic terms. Most graphic of all is a
four-fifths replica of the Statue of
Liberty's hand and torch reach-
ing from floor to ceiling.
Named after Jack Skirball, a
rabbi and motion picture pro-
ducer who made his money in
real estate, the museum in-
cludes a 350-seat auditorium for
concerts and readings, class-
rooms and meeting facilities, an
outdoor plaza for open-air per-
formances and a restaurant.
The museum is open Tuesday,
Wednesday and Friday from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday from 10
a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday and
Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.;
closed Monday. For information,

In Atlanta is the new Jewish
Heritage Museum (June 1996).
The largest museum of its
kind in the Southeast, it has two
core galleries which help inter-
pret and explore our Jewish her-
itage.
One gallery has an exhibition
called "Creating Community:
The Jews of Atlanta from 1845
to the present." The story starts
with two young Jewish peddlers
who settled in 1845. Today there
are more than 75,000 Jews liv-
ing in Atlanta.
"Creating Community" is told
in five parts. "Identifying" por-
trays social, ethnic, cultural and
religious aspects ofJewish iden-
tity; "Beginning" chronicles the
continuing waves ofJewish im-
migration to Atlanta, from the
first Germans in 1845 to the So-
viets of recent years, and illus-
trates how they have redefined
the community; "Belonging fo-
cuses on how Atlanta responded
to the Holocaust and the ongoing
support of Israel; "Interaction"
examines the relationship be-
tween the Jews and the general
Atlanta community; "Building
Community," which is the final
section, includes replicas of a
