"I recently lost my job when my company down sized. Is
there an agency that can help me update my resume and
find another position?"

itage back to the 1700s. Very few
are lapsed Jews. Some of the
members can track their fami-
lies to Spain through Morocco
when they left in 1492. Jews in
Gib came from Greece, Minorca
and Genoa.
In Artricle 10 of the Treaty of
Utrecht, when Spain ceded
Gibraltar to the British, there's
a stipulation which states that
even today no Jews or Moors are
allowed on Gib. Mr. Levy's un-
cle, Joshua Hassan, who was
prime minister for 40 years,
didn't take it seriously. "Nobody
cared then and nobody cares
now about that issue," said Mr.
Levy. His great-grandfather and
grandfather were born on Gib.
His wife's family has a similar
lineage.

Jewish Information and Referral
Service refers people who are looking
for jobs to agencies that provide
employment services.

One call can lead to informa-
tion about agencies that offer counsel-
ing. Last year, JIS referred 176 people
to the Jewish Vocational Service,
where they learned job hunting skills,
resume writing and interviewing tech-
niques.

JIS has thousands of resources
to answer your questions. For informa-
tion or referral, call JIS,

Gib is a
microcosm
of a
typical Jewish
community.

Surprise after surprise. This
time to find out that Gib has an
extremely well organized Jew-
ish community. In fact, Spain's
community has often asked for
help and advice on education
and burials.
Keeping up with the strong
Orthodoxy, which is the choice
of the majority of Jews in the
area, going to synagogue every
day and keeping kosher are a
way of life. When the subject of
intermarriage comes up, a wor-
ried frown creeps onto Mr.
Levy's face. Here, conversion to
Judaism isn't likely to be ac-
ceptable. Obviously a subject Mr.
Levy doesn't dismiss easily and
feels uncomfortable discussing.
"It's tough; we have no option.
We do what we have to with a
heavy heart." All four syna-
gogues are Orthodox. The com-
munity houses people who are
notionally Reform in philosophy.
But if there's a wedding between
two non-Orthodox Jews, kosher
food is served.
The two daily minyans — one
at 7:30 a.m. and the other at 8:30
a.m. — are well attended, with
40 members at the first and 20
at the later one. The chief rabbi,
a former engineer, is from
Britain.
The majority of Jewish
merchants, professionals and
businessmen all agree to
close business on Sabbath. Even
Mr. Levy's own law practice
which employs, among others,
seven non-Jewish lawyers,
closes its doors every single
Jewish holiday without excep-
tion.
