"I haven't had to sacrifice any
of my principles. I put them up
front. And my children have ac-
cepted them," says Mr. Levy. His
10 children are learning Jewish
life at the knees of a kind, de-
voted Sephardic father.
Just as I am about to leave,
he rings for Mosihe, a young
lawyer who is president of
the KK. Nefusot Yehudah Syn-
agogue on Line Wall Road. He
would like me to see the fine ren-
ovations. The marble bimah has
replaced the original wood one,
destroyed after a fire at the end
of the century. The Torahs date
back in time; they were brought
over from Morocco. The dark
wood benches are filled every
Friday and the mezzanine for
the women is under a beautiful-
ly-worked dome.
The white stucco building,
standing beside the tallest palm
tree in Gibraltar, is a landmark
in a city uniquely settled on
a very large rock called Gibral-
tar.
