Unprepossessing, James Levy
underlined the fact at the very
start of the interview that he
would much prefer if I spoke
with David Benaim, the present
president and a good and long-
time friend "like a brother, real-
ly." However, I explained that
even this short time was found
time for me as I was on Gib on
another assignment.
Gib is a microcosm of a typi-
cal Jewish community, since it
has all the services.
There's an old age home,
school, kosher restaurant, Tal-
mudic college and a club. The
small commmunity center will
soon give way to a larger one
which the government will pro-
vide.
Although there are only 600
Jews, many can trace their her-

Quite unexpectedly and not
sure that there was a Jewish
community in Gibraltar (Gib as
it is affectionately called), I
asked and found myself in the
lobby of the large legal firm J.A.
Hassan & Partners, waiting for
a lawyer who had been the past
president of the Jewish commu-
nity.
