SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
"Separate and equal" is the
essence of the relationship be-
tween two Jerusalem-based
women's centers, one Israeli
and one Palestinian, both of
which were founded in 1992.
When working together, Bat
Shalom (Daughter of Peace) in
western Jerusalem and Mar-
caz al-Quds la l-Nissah
(Jerusalem Center for Women)
in eastern Jerusalem, form the
Jerusalem Link. Both sepa-
rately and together, they work
for peace, human rights and
fundamental women's empow-
erment within what, to varying
degrees, are patriarchal soci-
eties.
Because members of both or-
ganizations believe in a two-
state solution with the respec-
tive parts of Jerusalem as the
capital of each state, the recog-
nition of separation on some is-
sues and cooperation on others
is a microcosm of how they
foresee the future.
One of their programs of the
Jerusalem Center for Women,
active throughout Judea,
Samaria and Gaza, nurtures
activists in women's non-gov-
ernmental organizations and
political parties.
Poignant testimony to the ef-
fect of these programs came at
the end of the mourning period
for Prime Minister Yitzhak Ra-
bin. Bat Shalom organized a
"Peace Bus" which traveled to
Arab villages all over Israel.
Women at the different stops
gathered outdoors and wel-
comed the 50 travelers with
music, discussion and tears. ❑
