Again facing Toronto, Detroit split two
games in the best-of-five match, but won
the next two games to set up a rematch
with Chicago for the gold medal.
Chicago took the first game 15-8, but
the Detroiters stormed back to win the
next three games and the gold medal, 15-
11, 15-7, 15-8.
In the decisive third game, Allison
Surowitz used a soccer-style kick to save
a ball and a crucial point in the match.
Coaches Ken Bertin and Sam Skeegan
credited the spectacular play of captains
Surowitz and Jaimee Weiner, steady
performances by Sarah Schreiber and
Marci Cohen, crucial saves by Julie
Altus and Jenny Weinberg in the
back row and Nicole Siegel in the front
row.
SWIMMING
Detroit's swimmers took advantage of
their opportunities and won numerous
medals in the four-day swimming compe-
tition.
In 15-16 girls, Jenny MacDonald was
third in the 400 individusl medley, 5:24.57;
third in the 100 fly, 1:05.66; third in the
200 fly, 2:29.75.
Cheri Farber was first in the 100 back,
1:10.92; third in 50 free, 28.45. Melissa
Axner was third in the 100 back, 1:12.71;
and first in the 200 back, 2:32.77.
In 15-16 boys, Jeremy Landa was third
in 100 fly, 1:03.02; third in the 50 free,
26.25. Steven Misuraca was third in 100
breast, 1:12.6.
In 13-14 girls, Elizabeth MacDonald
dominated the meet by winning eight in-
dividual gold medals — the 400 individ-
ual medley, 5:25.06; 100 free, 1:02.35; 100
fly, 1:09.46; 200 free, 2:12; 200 fly, 2:33.44;
200 IM, 2:34.00; 50 free, 28.95; 400 free,
4:37.8.
Anything left by Elizabeth was taken
by Davita Burkhead-Weiner — first in
100 back, 1:10.78; second in 100 free,
1:04.33; third in 100 fly, 1:13.65; second
in 200 free, 2:19.00; second in 400 free,
4:51.77; second in 200 TM, 2:40.00; and
first in 200 back, 2:34.

Arm Arbor's Maccabi contin-
gent won its first team medal
ever while participating in the
Maccabi Games in St. Louis.
The girls volleyball team
