el 8 and Level 9 athletes in the competi-
tion.
But, according to Detroit coach Andy
Tucker, underneath Kaufman's pretty
smile and polite manners is a tough com-
petitor. The only Detroit gymnast at the
games, Kaufman won the all-around gold
medal on Tuesday. She followed up on
Wednesday with a gold on the bars, a sil-
ver in the vault, and bronze medals on
beam and floor exercise.
Are the Olympics in her future? She
doesn't think so, but she would like some
day to earn a place on the U.S. team at the
World Maccabiah Games in Israel. "Mac-
cabi is an international competition and I
really look forward to it," Erin said.

BASKETBALL

Detroit's boys team played in the 15-16
age group and provided one of the most
exciting moments of the tournament in
(') their third game, against host MetroW-
• est's Red team.
Trailing by 12 points with seven min-
▪ utes left in the game, the Detroiters went
on a 19-4 run to take a 55-52 lead with
U1 three minutes to play. MetroWest fought
back to a one-point lead with 48 seconds
o to go, and ultimately won 61-58. But Matt
cc Ishbia kept it interesting with two des-
• peration three-point shots at the buzzer.
Ishbia scored 30 points in the game and
LU
Jared Pitt added 10.
Unfortunately, because of seeding, De-
troit played MetroWest again Wednesday
morning after staying up late on the Tues-

70

day night boat cruise. MetroWest was
among the delegations that went on the
cruise Wednesday night. Detroit lost the
8:30 a.m. game 56-45, missing out on
medal play with a final record of 2-2. Ish-
bia led even scoring for Detroit with 11
points. Jordan Weiner contributed nine,
Eric Silver scored eight, and Jared Pitt
had six.
In an earlier game, Detroit beat Ottawa
75-46. Ishbia had 25 points and 10 assists,
Josh Wohl had 16 points, and Jared Pitt
had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Detroit
defeated Miami 54-52, with Ishbia lead-
ing with 32 points and eight assists and
Weiner scoring 10 points.
While losing Ishbia next year, the team
will return Weiner, Pitt and Silver, Jere-
my Manson and Brian Shulman.

TABLE TENNIS

Detroiters did well in table tennis, with
Jon Triest and Jake Cohen taking the
bronze in 13-14 doubles, Mike Rott and
Andy Black taking silver in 15-16 doubles,
Black taking the silver in 15-16 singles,
and Detroit taking the team bronze be-
hind Black, Rott, Triest and Cohen.
Bronze medals were awarded to Jeff
Sonne and Brett Kifferstein in 13-14 dou-
bles, and Cohen won a silver and Kiffer-
stein a bronze in the mixed team event.
The games were played in tiny confer-
ence rooms at the West Orange, N.J., JCC
on Monday, but moved to larger rooms on
Tuesday for the remainder of the tourna-
ment.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Detroit girls have been over-
matched in recent Maccabi competitions,
but it hasn't dampened their spirit.
According to assistant coach Jeffrey Fox,
the girls were more concerned about hav-
ing time to take a shower and blow their
hair dry before the Circle Line boat trip
Tuesday than about whining a late after-
noon game.
But win they did, behind three goals
from Lindsey Fox and the game winner
from Lisa Schwartz in a come-from-be-
hind 4-3 victory over MetroWest's White
team.
Getting to the boat on time was anoth-
er matter. A bus was waiting for the team
at the soccer field, but the driver had in-
structions to take the girls to the JCC in
Whippany instead of the JCC in West Or-
ange where the cruise transportation wait-
ed. Leah Fox, wife of coach Jeffrey Fox,
told the driver, "I don't care if I have to dri-
ve this bus myself. We're going to the West
Orange JCC." And they did!

TRACK

Adam Ogusky led the Detroit contin-
gent with three individual and two relay
gold medals, anchoring the 4x400 team to
a come-from-behind win. He won the 13-
14 long jump, high jump and 100-meter
hurdles, and anchored the 4x100 and
4x400 coed relays.
In the 15-16 age group, Jenny Adelson
won the shot put and took a silver medal
in high jump. Nathan Miller took a silver

in the 300-meter hurdles and a bronze in
the 100-meter hurdles.
In 13-14, Brian Fenster won the silver
medal in the 3200 and bronze in the 800.
The two gold-medal relays had Erika
Rives, Elyse Simon, Fenster and Ogusky
in the 4x100, and Cathy Garrett replac-
ing Simon for the 4x400.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys team surprised Detroit's vol-
leyball coaches and most of its opponents
in New Jersey. With only one experienced
player returning, Detroit had expected to
be in a rebuilding mode.
But the boys roared back after dropping
two games to Rochester, winning nine of
their next 10 to win their four-team divi-
sion.
In the medal rounds, the boys lost two
close games to an experienced Ottawa
team.
They were led by Rob Deroven, with
strong support from Adam Babcock, Eric
Brown, Howard Dworman, and Steve and
Greg Galperin.
The Detroit girls continued their strong
tradition by winning the gold medal. Af-
ter losing the first game of a three-game
set to Toronto, the girls came back to win
the match and then swept Ottawa three
straight.
After winning the first game against
Chicago, Detroit's girls lost the next two.
Despite sweeping Pittsburgh, the girls
found themselves seeded second to Chica-
go in the medal rounds.
