Pull Of The Faithful

The settlers are waiting to reap the rewards of their
staunch support for Likud's candidate.

LARRY DERFNER ISRAEL CORRESPONDENT

N

week

after Likud leader
Benyamin Netanyahu's
election, the 400-odd Jew-
ish settlers in the heart of
the contentious city of Hebron
and their thousands of visiting
supporters danced and celebrat-
ed their victory "miracle."
They even discounted reports
that Mr. Netanyahu might go
ahead with the Israeli army pull-
out from Hebron, as called for in
the Oslo Accords, as "disinfor-
mation."
Mr. Netanyahu sent the set-
tlers a message: "I am full of ap-
preciation for your Zionist and
pioneering work, which contin-
ues the Jewish presence in the
oldest Jewish city in the world —
the older sister of Jerusalem. Be
strong and brave."
Indeed, the celebrants came
away stronger, braver and more
encouraged than ever.
"From our point of view (an
army withdrawal) just can't be;
it's out of the question; it's not a
realistic possibility, so we don't
think about it," said Noam
Arnon, spokesman for the He-
bron settlers.
But how would the settlers
and the rest of the right-wing
"street" react if it happened?
"How would a man react if he
found out his wife had betrayed
him?" Mr. Arnon asked rhetori-
cally.
The general assumption is
that Prime Minister Netanyahu
will be a far more moderate, con-
ciliatory figure than candidate

Mr. Netanyahu.
Statements coming out of the
White House, and the dominant
view on Israeli op-ed pages, is
that Mr. Netanyahu will find a
way to deal with Yassir Arafat
and the Palestinian Authority,
and move the peace process
along, even if more slowly and
hesitantly than Shimon Peres
did. The pragmatists of the world
believe "reality" — American and
European pressure, Palestinian
threats and Israeli fears — will
compel Mr. Netanyahu to go
along with the program.
But there is another large, in-
fluential constituency that sees
a reverse reality. It exists main-
ly, but by no means exclusively,
in the West Bank settlements
and Jerusalem, and it is peopled
not by pragmatists but by ideo-
logues.
These are the people who
carried the brunt of Mr. Ne-
tanyahu's campaign in the Israeli
street during the last weeks be-
fore the election. They stood at
highway intersections across the
country holding up Netanyahu
banners.
"I don't think he wants to re-
ject the people who brought him
to power," claimed Mr. Arnon.
"He doesn't want the right-wing
street to go against him."
In the last few days of the cam-
paign, the street campaign was
taken over by the zealots of the
Chabad Chasidic movement.
They held banners and handed
out bumper stickers that read,
