1996 CHRYSLER CONCORDE

"Netanyahu - It's Good for the
Jews." (Since Israeli Arabs were
voting for Peres, Israeli Jews
should vote for Mr. Netanyahu.)
Asked how Chabadniks would
react if the new prime minister
pulled the army out of Hebron,
or allowed the Palestinian Au-
thority to continue operating its
unofficial foreign ministry in east
Jerusalem's Orient House,
Chabad spokesman Menachem
Brod said: "We don't want to
think about that possibility. The
late Rebbe (Menachem Mendel
Schneersohn) tells us that if we
think good thoughts, good things
will happen."

"He doesn't want
the right-wing street
to go against him."

— Noam Arnon

Shortly after the election, Na-
dia Matar, leader of the vocifer-
ous right-wing Women In Green,
had her newborn son circumsized
outside the Cave of the Patri-
archs in Hebron. The celebration
took on the flavor of a political
demonstration. Mrs. Matar, too,
sees no room for compromise on
Hebron — "The army has to
maintain full, complete control
everywhere in the city."
Asked how she would react if
the pullout went ahead under
Netanyahu, Mrs. Matar replied:
"I don't think it's going to hap-
pen."
For Yehiel Leiter, a leading ac-
tivist in the YESHA (Judea,
Samaria and Gaza) Council, Mr.
Netanyahu's commitment to neu-
tralize Orient House is absolute.
"He made this promise repeat-
edly — overseas, in Israel, time
and time again," said Mr. Leiter.
"If he doesn't do it, that will place
in doubt all his campaign promis-
es — on social issues, economic
issues, everything.
"Jerusalem was so central to
Mr. Netanyahu's campaign— he
would be shooting himself in both
feet if he lets that campaign
promise float in the air with no
action on the ground," Mr. Leit-
er continued.
Mr. Leiter believes that -at the
right time, the new prime min-
ister will make good on his
promise to put the Palestinians
out of business in Orient House.
But shutting down PA opera-
tions in East Jerusalem, or fail-
ing to make good on the army
withdrawal from Hebron, are
what Palestinian officials de-
scribe as a "declaration of war"
and a "murder of the peace
process."
These are the steps seen by the
powerful, "pragmatic" world as
provocative, but which the right-
wing street fully expects and de-
mands.
