known to drop over to one of the
children's homes at the spur of the
moment, hug whoever is around,
and leave in 10 minutes.
"You have to grab what you can
and enjoy it," says Mrs. Kaufman.
"It's that or making appointments
with your grandchildren some-
where between summer camp,
school and Hebrew school, Little
League, gymnastics, ice skating, ski-
ing on Saturday, Sunday school and
whatever else is planned.
"Our children's lifestyle plus the
lifestyle my husband and I live have
changed the more traditional role
of grandparenting. So much de-
pends on the needs of the parents
and the developmental stage of the
children.
"We're just taking a different ap-
proach to grandparenting than
what I expected, but the results are
just as precious," says Mrs. Kauf-
man.
If you have all day, watch sci-
ence come alive for grandchildren
at Impression 5 Science Center, a
hands-on science and technology
center in Lansing. One of the new
exhibits this summer is the "Walk
Through the Heart Exhibit,"
which features a huge heart and
an exploratic -i area with many
hands-on activities and a simulat-
ed medical center.
For those with younger grand-
children, such as those treasured
by Dr. Alicia and Paul Tisdale of
West Bloomfield, grandparents may
prefer to do "the old-fashioned
stuff," like strolling around the
neighborhood and playing in the
back yard.
"Our 2-year-old grandson sings
and dances when I play the piano.
We read to him. He plays in the
kitchen with pots and pans and on
the floor with his toys, his model
