Everybody who knows him says
he's bored, and he's just looking
for a ladder to climb down from
the Histadrut. If Rabin offers him
a good enough position, such as
head of the party's election cam-
paign, he'll leave the Histadrut
and go back to the Labor Party
— it's a foregone conclusion," said
Gideon Eshet, a leading colum-
nist for the Yediot Aharonot dai-
ly.
In an interview at his office
with the Atlanta Jewish Times,
Ramon made it clear that he was
ready to leave the leadership of
the Histadrut and go back to be-
ing a day-to-day Knesset mem-
ber and national politician. "I
never committed myself to serv-
ing a full [five-year] term," he
stressed. "I only said I would not
leave until I had fulfilled most of
my commitments to the workers,
and I have fulfilled a great many
of them."
During a recent meeting with
Labor Party members, Ramon
was typically cryptic about his
plans, saying he would prefer to
run in the elections on his own
ticket, but that he would not do
anything to help the Likud's
chances. He blasted the La-
bor/Histardut establishment of
old — "those in the party who
first pushed me out and are now
betting that I will be back."
They shouldn't take him for
granted, he warned.

ty, and he has two demands:
Knesset seats for the two party
MKs who bolted with him to run
in the Histadrut election, and a
senior position for himself. How-
ever, all the top-level government
ministries are spoken for. Chair-
manship of the party campaign
is still open, although it would be
odd for Labor's leading renegade
to suddenly become its chief po-
litical salesman.
But Rabiri, Peres and Co. need
Haim Ramon. He is young and
fresh while they are old and get-
ting stale; he embodies the coun-
try's strong anti-establishment
sentiment, while they embody en-
trenched power.
If Ramon does not rejoin the
fold, Labor will lose one of its
most popular figures. If he comes
back, and especially if he is giv-
en the reins of the campaign, the
Likud has much to worry about.
Ramon says he will make his
decision around the beginning of
next year. Until he does, the race
for Knesset and prime minister
remains, to a substantial degree,
up in the air. El
