UN Warms
To Israel Envoys
New York (JTA) — Advances in
the Middle East peace process
ensure that Israel will find a
warmer climate at the United
Nations, but Israel's struggle to
attain membership in a region-
al group remains a challenge,
according to Israel's U.N. Am-
bassador Gad Yaacobi.
At a briefing to mark the open-
ing of the 50th session of the
U.N. General Assembly, Yaac-
obi noted the improvement in
the "atmosphere" at the United
Nations and in Israel's overall
standing in the international
community since the signin,
of the Declaration of Principles
with the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization in September
1993.
Israel now has relations with
155 of 185 member states.
Last year, Israel "was not con-
demned even once by the Secu-
rity Council," Yaacobi said.
And, for the first time, four Is-
raelis were elected to U.N. posts
in secret ballots.
Yaacobi predicted that the
warming trend would only ac-
celerate with the implementa-
tion of the next stage of the
self-rule agreement with the
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion.
Letter-Bomb Trial
Is Under Way
Bonn (JTA) — Under strict se-
curity measures, a trial has be-
gun in Vienna for the wave of
letter bomb explosions that oc-
curred in December 1993 in the
Austrian capital.
Peter Binder and Franz Radl,
suspected of carrying out the
bombings, are the prominent
Austrian extremists on trial.
The two defendants, both 28,
have been charged in connection
with the following:
Within three days, 10 letter
bombs were sent to various Aus-
trian politicians and clergy, all
of whom supported the integra-
tion of foreigners into the coun-
try's general population. Four of
the bombs exploded, seriously in-
juring five people. One letter
bomb reached Vienna's former
mayor, Helmut Zilk, whose left
hand was torn to pieces in the ex-
plosion.
Mr. Binder and Mr. Radl ad-
mitted to participation in neo-
Nazi activities, but denied
carrying out the letter bomb-
ings.
Mr. Binder and Mr. Radl are
accused of belonging to the
ultrarightist VAPO organiza-
tion.
If convicted, both men face up
to 20 years imprisonment.
