TEAM: Millman-Derr Men's 65
Softball
DEED: Miller, 65, a manufacturer's
representative and West Bloom-
field resident, is a right-handed
left fielder on a local men's soft-
ball team which participates in a
North American league. For the
fourth time in six years, his team,
Millman-Derr, is contending in
the league's world series. This
year the championship takes
place Sept. 27- Oct. 3 in Palm
Springs, Calif.

THE SKINNY: Miller's team, spon-
sored by the Millman-Derr Eye
Clinic in Rochester, earned its spot
in this year's world series by go-
ing undefeated in a national tour-
nament for senior citizens held
over the July 4 weekend at Bar-
rymore Field in Clinton Township.
Miller had several base hits and
an outstanding defensive perfor-
mance. His team won the cham-
pionship game 19-4 over Old
Dominion of Northern Virginia.
QUOTE: "Millman-Derr won the
1991 world series," said Miller. "I
hope we can capture the title once
again, but no matter what, we
will still have fun."

NAME: Mara Garrett
TEAM: Detroit Maccabi Girls Soc-
cer Team
DEED: Garrett, 12, is a member of
the Detroit Maccabi girls soccer
team. She will represent Detroit's
Jewish community in this sum-
mer's Maccabi Games Aug. 11-17
in Houston, Texas.
THE SKINNY: Garrett took up soccer
three years ago. She played at
Oakley Park Elementary School
in Commerce Township and plans
to be part of the Clifford Smart
Middle School team next spring.
Her favorite position is center for-
ward, but she also plays left and
right forward. Garrett tried out
for the Maccabi team at West
Bloomfield's Jewish Community
Center in May. The team starts
practice at the end of July.
Garrett excels academically as
well as athletically. She is a
straight-A student and has won
various academic achievement
awards from Oakley Park Ele-
mentary School and Temple Kol

Ami, where she will have her bat
mitzvah in February.

Garrett also plays the cello and
won a scholarship this summer
to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in
Muskegon. In addition, Garrett
helped coach her school's chess
team. She is also a cadet for the
Michigan Metro Girl Scout Coun-
cil.

soccer in Houston for Detroit's
Maccabi team," Garrett said. "It
will be a great experience, and I
am excited to meet many new
people."

DIVISION:

NAME: Rebecca LeeAnne Nyquist
TEAMS: Bloomfield Open Hunt
Club swim team and Birmingham
Bloomfield Atlantis swim team
DEED: Nyquist, 8, broke two
Bloomfield Open Hunt Club
records in the butterfly and
breaststroke for her age group at
the team's home opening meet on
Sunday, July 2, against Birm-
ingham Country Club.

THE SKINNY: Nyquist, a third-grad-
er at Bloomfield Hills' Way Ele-
mentary School, shattered her
team's record by taking first place
in the 8-and-under age group for
the 25-meter butterfly and breast-
stroke. She also swam in the girls
10-and-under division in the 200-
meter freestyle relay for the
Bloomfield Open Hunt Club. The
team, which is co-ed and ranges
