Miller had several base hits and an outstanding defensive perfor- mance. His team won the cham- pionship game 19-4 over Old Dominion of Northern Virginia. Washington • Royal Oak • 810 543-0470 NAME: Mara Garrett TEAM: Detroit Maccabi Girls Soc- cer Team DEED: Garrett, 12, is a member of the Detroit Maccabi girls soccer team. She will represent Detroit's Jewish community in this sum- mer's Maccabi Games Aug. 11-17 in Houston, Texas. THE SKINNY: Garrett took up soccer three years ago. She played at Oakley Park Elementary School in Commerce Township and plans to be part of the Clifford Smart Middle School team next spring. Her favorite position is center for- ward, but she also plays left and right forward. Garrett tried out for the Maccabi team at West Bloomfield's Jewish Community Center in May. The team starts practice at the end of July. Garrett excels academically as well as athletically. She is a straight-A student and has won various academic achievement awards from Oakley Park Ele- mentary School and Temple Kol Ami, where she will have her bat mitzvah in February. Garrett also plays the cello and won a scholarship this summer to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Muskegon. In addition, Garrett helped coach her school's chess team.
