Members of the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra (IPO) have
marked the 50th anniversary of
the liberation of Nazi-occupied
Europe by recording a major
new orchestral and choral work
titled Liberation 95. The record-
ing of the symphony, written by
Israeli-born Meir Finkelstein,
who now lives in Los Angeles,
will be released in the near fu-
ture.
"The music is not so much
about the Holocaust," insists Mr.
Finkelstein, the son of a Holo-
caust survivor. "It is a celebra-
tion of life and survival." The
large-scale composition, a choral
symphony for full orchestra, 200-
voice choir, a children's choir and
three world-renowned soloists,
embodies musical elements from
the classics, jazz, and popular as
well as Jewish traditions.
