INTERESTED IN BRING
OR SELLING?

Mr. Finkelstein is a man of
many musical directions. Edu-
cated at London's Royal College
of Music, he is a cantor who
writes traditional Jewish
melodies. He also has written
music for TV series. Prior to
working on Liberation 95, he
composed "Nishmat Tsedek," a
liturgical composition about the
Jewish soul which was per-
formed by the Los Angeles
Chamber Orchestra and an 80-
voice choir.
Mr. Finkelstein composed the
symphony in collaboration with
executive producer Chayim
Frenkel. Los Angeles-based
Frenkel also is the son of a Holo-
caust survivor.
Recording of the symphony
took place in Tel Aviv's Mann Au-
ditorium, with members of both
the IPO and a 200-voice choir, in
December 1994. Liberation 95
will be performed live in Los an-
geles by the Los Angeles Phil-
harmonic Orchestra in November
1995 and conducted by the IPO's
Zubin Mehta. The two-part sym-
phony has 13 movements and be-
gins with music evoking the
flavor of pre-war Europe. An au-
dio-visual prelude to the work
consists of a large video screen
covering the front of the stage,
revealing footage of Jewish life
before the Holocaust. A short
montage of footage depicting
Nazis, death camps and libera-
tion dissolves to show the historic
announcement of Israel's inde-
pendence in 1948.
The final movement on Part II
brings together the entire en-
semble in an ode to joy, in what
the composer calls a powerful af-
firmation of the indomitable spir-
it of the Jewish people in
particular, and the ability of
mankind in general to survive
and flourish despite adversity.
