Holy Sepulchre
On A Stamp
Israel
I7?st -1 V-1 1
Visitors to the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem
can now purchase a stamp to
place on postcards and letters
that they send home. The pic-
ture of the church, which has
within its confines the last five
stations of the cross and is iden-
tified by Catholics and Orthodox
churches as the burial site of Je-
sus, is one of a series of nine
stamps depicting pilgrimage and
tourist locations around Israel.
The stamps issued resemble la-
bels and are dispensed by an au-
tomatic machine rather then a
post office counter clerk.
"This method enables us to be
very flexible," explains Yaakov
Vidas, deputy director of the Phi-
latelic Service of the Israel
Postal Authority. "The purchas-
er can adjust the machine to
stamp the denomination he re-
quires, according to the desti-
nation and whether a letter or
postcard is being mailed."
All the stamps in the series
were designed by Israeli artis
Marion Kudner. She has drawn
the courtyard and entrance of
the Church of the Holy Sepul-
chre in hues of brown, purple
and white. Written on the stamp
are the words Jerusalem and Is-
rael in English, Hebrew and
Arabic.
