The Jewish legend implies that
the artist is God-directed and di-
vinely inspired, that the creative
Spirit of God guides and works
through the artists. He or she is
the conscious agent of God's de-
sign, recreating God's work by la-
boring in His shadow.
What a magnificent tribute to
the artist and a fine retort to
those who still claim that Jewish
tradition denies the realm of aes-
thetics and lacks artists' sensi-
tivity and receptivity. ❑

unchanging
phenomenon
throughout Jewish history and
have failed to see within the Bible
itself (as in later Jewish tradition)
that varying attitudes are con-
stantly expressed toward images.
As a matter of fact, God Him-
self is conceived of as an artist
who, like a sculptor, creates the
first human being out of clay
(Genesis 2:7), and it is Job (8:14)
who reminds God "Your hands
shaped and fashioned me from
clay." Such an idea is not out of
keeping with the Bible's Western
Asian background, where build-
ings and works of art of clay, the
major raw material at hand, fre-
quently were created by archi-
tects and artists.
Furthermore, the same Book
of Exodus that carries the pro-
scription against images offers a
sublime description of the
"desert" artist, Bezalel, employed
to build the Tabernacle in the
wilderness. His skills are more
highly praised than that of any
other craftsman in the Bible or,
for that matter, in any extant an-
cient Western Asian text.
In Exodus 31:3-5, Bezalel is
represented as endowed with "a
divine spirit of skill, ability and
knowledge in every kind of craft:
to make designs for work in gold,
silver and copper, to cut stones
for setting and to carve wood —
to work in every kind of craft."
That the Bible did not unilat-
erally condemn images is clear
also from the description of the
building of Solomon's Temple at
Jerusalem with its "graven" im-
ages of oxen and cherubim. The
coppersmith Hiram of Tyre, who
was engaged in Solomon's Tem-
ple project, always was en-
dowed with "skill, ability and
knowledge" (I Kings 7:14).
Most revealing within Jewish
tradition is the legend recount-
ing the great difficulty Moses had
constructing the seven-branched
lamp stand (Menorah) for the
Tabernacle. Moses ascended Mt.
Sinai several times to obtain in-
structions from God, each time
forgetting them when he de-
scended the mountain. Finally,
God in exasperation told him, "
to Bezalel. He will make it!"
When Bezalel had no difficulty
creating it, Moses cried out in
amazement, 'To me it was shown
repeatedly, yet I could not prop-
erly grasp it, but you without
having it shown to you by God
could fashion it with your artis-
tic skill. Truly you deserve the
name Bezalel, for you acted as
if you were standing in the shad-
ow of God (bezel-El) while he was
showing me the construction of
the lamp stand" (Numbers Rab-
bah 15:10).
Rupert of Deutz, a 12th-cen-
tury Christian theologian, echoes
Moses' sentiments, claiming that
artists like Bezalel are the Lord's
shadow and "their talents are not
their own, but bestowed on them
by their Creator."
