Artistic Expressions

Custom Florals by

Nussbaum which far exceeded
their pre-sale estimates.
Felix Nussbaum, an impor-
tant artist whose works rarely
appear at auction, perished at
Auschwitz in 1944. It is, there-
fore, particularly poignant in
this 50th anniversary year of
the liberation of that camp, that
his Self Portrait with a Mask of
1928 sold for $101,500 against
its estimate of $20/$30,000
Nvhile The Organ Grinders, a
study for his most monumental
oil, sold for $90,500 (est:
$15/20,000).
Sotheby's will donate its corn-
mission for the Self-Portrait with
a Mask to AMCHA-National Is-
raeli Centre for Psychosocial
Support of Survivors of the Holo-
caust and the Second
Generation. Mr. Nussbaum 's
works drew vivid interest from
private collectors of German
artists of the 1930s and from
museums with the Self-Portrait
going to a German collector and
The Organ Grinders going to the
Museum of Osnabruck in Ger-
many.
In the 10th anniversary year
of the artist's death, Marc Cha-
gall's Double Portrait with a
Glass of Wine, a work of 1922
and a study after the artist's cel-
ebrated oil now in the collection
of the Centre Georges Pompi-
dou, sold for $519,500. Other
early and important works by
the artist achieved high prices
with his circa 1926 gouache Les
Deux Perroquets, Le Roi et son
Fils more than tripling its esti-
mate of $70/90,000 to sell for
$233,500. Chagall's 1950 oil, Les
Amoureux au Village, brought
$420,500 while his Self-Portrait
sold for $68,500.
Other works by School of
Paris artists did well, with Moi-
se Kisling's sumptuous Nature
Morte aux Fruits et Legumes
bringing $112,500 and his
Bouqet de Fleurs Variees et Mi-
mosa selling for $118,000.
Important early works by ma-
jor Israeli artists performed ex-
ceedingly well, with Reuven
Rubin's Market Scene, an oil of
1923 painted in the artist's dis-
tinctive early manner, fetching
$118,000. Pinchas Litvinovsky's
Fruit Seller, a Cubist watercol-
or executed in 1925, sold for
$19,500 while two virtuoso pas-
tels by Abel Pann, Dina and And
God Remembered Rachel, ex-
ceeded their estimates selling
respectively for $20,700 and
$18,400. Two works by
Mordechai Ardon, Yellow Land-
scape and The Moon above the
Kotel, brought $101,500 and
$107,000 respectively.
Significant and rare early
works by these artists drew spir-
ited competition from local and
international private buyers
both in attendance in a full-to-
capacity auction room and on
the telephones.
