Professor Sachs
Elected To Post

Weizmann Institute Professor
Leo Sachs, the Otto Meyerhof
Professor of Molecular Biology in
the Department of Molecular Ge-
netics and Virology, has been
elected a Foreign Associate of the
U.S. National Academy of Sci-
ences. Professor Sachs has made
pioneer contributions to eluci-
dating the control of growth and
differentiation in normal and
cancer cells, including the dis-
covery of the first cell culture sys-
tem for cloning and clonal
development of normal blood
cells. Using this method he dis-
covered the first protein regula-
tors of this clonal growth and
differentiation, which revolu-
tionized molecular and cellular
hematology.

His discoveries have
pioneered new
approaches.

The families of proteins that
have been identified based on
Professor Sachs' discovery in-
clude those now called colony-
stimulating factors and
interleukins. His findings have
led to the clinical use of these pro-
teins to correct defects in blood
cell development in patients with
hematological disorders includ-
ing cancer. He also showed that
myeloid leukemic cells can be in-
duced to differentiate to mature
cells that are no longer malignant
— by normal blood cell regulato-
ry proteins or by other com-
pounds that use alternative
pathways of inducing differenti-
ation. His findings have pio-
neered new approaches and
insights into the controls that
regulate blood cell viability,
growth and differentiation, the
molecular basis of normal and
abnormal development in blood-
forming tissues, ways of sup-
pressing malignancy in leukemic
cells by inducing differentiation,
and the use of blood cell regula-
tory proteins to correct defects in
blood cell development.
In addition, Professor Sachs
developed the first cell culture
system for malignant cell trans-
formation by chemical carcino-
gens and radiation, which
provided a new approach to
studying carcinogenesis by envi-
ronmental carcinogens and
showed that by segregation of
specific chromosomes, malig-
nancy can be suppressed in sar-
comas induced with different
types of carcinogens. His studies
on suppression of malignancy in
sarcomas identified chromo-
somes with genes for the expres-
sion and suppression of
malignancy. He also found that
