Jordan and Israel have initiated
a cooperative effort to eradicate
rabies via the humane method of
dropping oral vaccine pellets in
areas of both countries -populat-
ed by the disease's main trans-
mitter, wild foxes and jackals.
This was announced here to-
day by Nina Natelson, founding
Director of Concern for Helping
Animals in Israel (CHAI), in
Alexandria, Va. CHAI has long
pressed the Israeli government
to begin using the oral vaccine, a
technique that has virtually erad-
icated rabies in Western Europe.
CHAT has just marked its 11th
anniversary of work to advance
animal protection in Israel.
Ms. Natelson said the oral vac-
cine will be distributed simulta-
neously in Israel and Jordan
after tests on animals who were
fed the vaccine are completed. Dr.
Amnon Shimshony, director of
the veterinary services division
of the Israeli Ministry of Agri-
culture, is coordinating the dis-
tribution with his Jordanian
counterpart, Dr. Mouchlas Am-
rin.
CHAT hailed the decision by
Dr. Shimshony to distribute the
oral rabies vaccine as a victory in
its long struggle toward elimi-
nating the mass strychnine poi-
soning of animals in Israel. This
is the method, conducted by
many municipalities, with the
approval of the Agriculture Min-
istry, that is currently used to
"control" the spread of rabies.
"Mass strychnine poisonings
are cruel and ineffective in con-
trolling rabies," Ms. Natelson
said.
