Israeli Poet
Found Dead

Jerusalem (JTA) โ€” Israeli poet
David Avidan was found dead in
his Tel Aviv apartment.
Mr. Avidan suffered from asth-
ma, but the cause of death was
not immediately known.
Mr. Avidan, 61, was born in
Tel Aviv. He published more than
30 books of poetry, and his work
appeared in translation in inter-
national anthologies. Last year,
Mr. Avidan received the presti-
gious Bialik Poetry Award in Is-
rael.
An accomplished playwright
and screenwriter as well, Mr. Avi-
dan was known for his creative
use of the Hebrew language. He
wrote four short films, one of
which, Sex, was shown at a
Cannes Film Festival in the ear-
ly 1970s.
Mr. Avidan, a leader of the
modern generation of Israeli po-
ets, reportedly was unable to sup-
port himself financially. A June
1994 television report showed his
poor living conditions.

New York (JTA) โ€” The govern-
ment of Belarus has assured vis-
iting Jewish leaders that the
country would not tolerate anti-
Semitism.
In a series of historic meetings,
President Alyadsandr Lukashen-
ka and Prime Minister Mikhail
Chigir also said that previously
Jewish-owned properties would
be returned to the Jewish corn-
munity.
If a specific site cannot be re-
turned, an alternative site will be
given in exchange, they said.
The Jewish delegation con-
sisted of leaders from the Con-
ference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations
and the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry.
The visit to Belarus was the
first stop of a mission that in-
cluded visits with government
and Jewish leaders in St. Pe-
tersburg and Moscow.
In Moscow, the group was
scheduled to meet with Russian
Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev.
In Belarus, the group met with
Leonid Levin, the head of the Be-
larussian Jewish community,
and the Israeli and American am-
bassadors to Belarus, Elie Valk.
and Kenneth Yalovitz.
Jewish leaders said they were
pleased with the talks in Belarus
and felt that much was accom-
plished, Malcolm Hoenlein, ex-
ecutive vice chairman of the
Conference of Presidents, said.
