Israeli Poet Found Dead Jerusalem (JTA) โ€” Israeli poet David Avidan was found dead in his Tel Aviv apartment. Mr. Avidan suffered from asth- ma, but the cause of death was not immediately known. Mr. Avidan, 61, was born in Tel Aviv. He published more than 30 books of poetry, and his work appeared in translation in inter- national anthologies. Last year, Mr. Avidan received the presti- gious Bialik Poetry Award in Is- rael. An accomplished playwright and screenwriter as well, Mr. Avi- dan was known for his creative use of the Hebrew language. He wrote four short films, one of which, Sex, was shown at a Cannes Film Festival in the ear- ly 1970s. Mr. Avidan, a leader of the modern generation of Israeli po- ets, reportedly was unable to sup- port himself financially. A June 1994 television report showed his poor living conditions. In a series of historic meetings, President Alyadsandr Lukashen- ka and Prime Minister Mikhail Chigir also said that previously Jewish-owned properties would be returned to the Jewish corn- munity. If a specific site cannot be re- turned, an alternative site will be given in exchange, they said. The Jewish delegation con- sisted of leaders from the Con- ference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and the National Conference on Soviet Jewry. The visit to Belarus was the first stop of a mission that in- cluded visits with government and Jewish leaders in St. Pe- tersburg and Moscow. In Moscow, the group was scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev. In Belarus, the group met with Leonid Levin, the head of the Be- larussian Jewish community, and the Israeli and American am- bassadors to Belarus, Elie Valk. and Kenneth Yalovitz.
