AN AEROBICS STUDIO

Fitness is for EVERY BODY!

FITNESS

I Ii, I'm Dee Hakala, the first winner of the
Nike Fitness Innovation Award. I have
created a unique fitness program specifically
designed for the needs of the overweight,
out-of-shape, or medically supervised. And
I did it by starting with me!

Protective
Protein Identified

A bacterial protein that protects
animals against an autoimmune
disease similar to multiple scle-
rosis in humans was identified
in a Weizmann Institute study
that appeared in a recent issue
of the Journal of Immunology.
Although autoimmune dis-
eases are often induced by ge-
netic factors,they can also be
brought on by environmental
/3 agents such as viruses and bac-
teria. Three years ago, Professor
Avraham Ben-Nun and Dr. Dan
Lehmann of the department of
cell biology demonstrated and in-
teresting paradox: A bacterium
known as Mycobacterium tu-
berculosis (Mt) not only promotes
the induction of autoimmune dis-
eases in mice, but also protects
against their development. In the
current study, Professor Ben-
Nun — along with Australian
visiting scientist Dr.Nicole Ker-
lero de Rosbo and doctoral stu-
dents Itzhak Mendel and Gregor
Sappler — identified a specific
protein of this bacterium as the
component that provides this
protective activity.
The researchers worked with
mice suffering from experimen-
tal autoimmune encephalo-
myelitis (EAE), whose pathology
and clinical manifestations close-
ly resemble those of multiple
sclerosis (MS). In both diseases
the body's immune system at-
tacks scattered areas of the brain
and spinal cord, causing infla-
mation and stripping nerve
fibers of their insulating myelin
sheaths and their ability to con-
duct impulses.
The Weizmann team also
found that this protein of molec-
ular mass 12-kDa could enhance
the production of protective
"T"lymphocytes without stimu-
lating production of "encephali-
togenic" T cells; the latter type
are highly pathogenic and specif-
ically attack myelin. Thus the re-
searchers have concluded that
effective protection against EAE
by the 12-kDa protein, in the ab-
sence of stimulatory effect on en-
cephalitogenic T lymphocytes,
suggests a potential use for this
protein in the therapy of au-
toimmune diseases.

HOT SHOTS

Do you have an item for "Hot Shots"?
"Hot Shots" is a periodic column rec-
ognizing medical professionals for
achievements in their field. Please
send items to Ruth Littmann at The
Jewish News, 27676 Franklin, South-
field, MI 48034. A picture would be
appreciated. It can be color or black-
and-white, but it must be in focus. If
you wish to have the picture returned,
you must enclose a self-addressed,
stamped envelope.

When I began developing the program, I had
lots of medical problems and weighed close
to 300 pounds. Now I'm fit, my medical
problems are gone, I have lost over 100
pounds and 35 inches.

More than anything else, I believe fitness
should be fun and non-intimidating. After
all, fitness isn't an event, it's a way of life.

If you feel like I do and would like to
participate in this unique fitness and
wellness program here in Oakland County, I
hope you'll call Jennifer Mills for more
information today.
