Body May Be Reason
For Not Losing Pounds

JACK WILLIAMS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

I

f you're among the millions of
dieters who've found it impos-
sible to prevent those pounds
you've lost from returning like
uninvited guests, blame your
body, not your resolve.
It's likely that you need a lot
fewer calories than you did be-
fore, even if you're exercising reg-
ularly, to maintain that target
weight, suggests a study in a re-
cent story in the New England
Journal of Medicine.
The study, while not the last
word on the mysteries of human
physiology, indicates that obesity
may be less a reflection of overindul-
gence than a natural condition.
The culprit appears to be "the
set point," which strives to keep
weight at a constant level. And
it differs among individuals.
But one thing is true of all of
us, from the obese to the lean:
When body weight changes, the
body tries to change it back.
Still, weight-management pro-
fessionals and people engaged in
the battle of the bulge know that
positive results can occur with
long-term lifestyle changes and
diet management.

But perhaps not for all indi-
viduals.
People who are not clinically
obese (20 percent or more above
their reasonable weight) are most
likely to respond to lifestyle
changes, said Dr. Peter Sacks, a
consultant on weight manage-
ment in the division of internal
medicine at Scripps Clinic and re-
search Foundation in San Diego.
"It' s my feeling," he said, "that
those 30 to 40 percent overweight
relapse quickly, and that they
need appetite-suppressant drugs
rather than behavioral modifi-
cation and diet control."
Studies have shown that at
least 90 percent of dieters regain
the weight they've lost, and the
Rockefeller University re-
searchers in the New England
Journal study looked at 18 obese
people and 23 who never were
obese. They put them on re-
stricted liquid diets to chart their
weight and caloric intake.
The team then reduced and in-
creased the research subjects'
body weight by 10 percent and
monitored how the body con-
sumed calories.
