dowment, and it's also getting
royalties on its projects which al-
most totally equal the endow-
ment."
Now, Mr. Mlaysky says, no-
body can deny that Israel can
play in the big leagues.
"The fact that these relation-
ships established through BIRD
have stuck together, and many
of them have gone on to much
more elaborate interrelation-
ships, is a clear testament to the
intrinsic honesty and openness
of both sides to be very pragmatic
in their relationships — with no
funny games," he says.
Just as important as the mon-
ey generated, Mr. Mlaysky adds,
is what the projects have done
for Israel's image.
"I don't think you can walk
around Silicon Valley and talk
about BIRD and find anybody
who hasn't heard of it," he says.
Today, because of BIRD, "Is-
rael has become well-known.
Many Israelis work in Silicon
Valley and enjoy an excellent
reputation as creative engineers.
They are very bright, very capa-
ble.
"Many are highly qualified se-
nior executives and are bringing
their skills back to Israel ...
There was a great brain-drain in
Israel for a long time, but we've
gotten some back."
The end of Mr. Mlaysky's
tenure at BIRD could have been
a graceful time to return to
Boston, or head for Silicon Val-
ley.
But, "it's more fun here than
anywhere else I know. It's more
stimulating. Things are hap-
pening. It's one of the fastest-
growing economies in the world,"
he says.
And Israel's the right size.
"If it were smaller, it would be
duller," he says. "If it were larg-
er, it would be harder to keep
one's finger on the pulse." ❑
French Company
Ready To Invest
Clal Israel and Accor, one of the
largest tourism companies in the
world, are in advanced negotia-
tions to invest $35 million in the
establishment of hotel property
and management companies,
Clal Israel announced to the Tel
Aviv Stock Exchange.
Clal said its share in the ven-
ture with the French-based Ac-
cor would be about equal.
According to the announce-
ment, Clal and Accor plan to set
up two companies — a property
firm to invest in hotels and a ho-
tel-management company.
The hotels would be situated
in popular tourism resorts like
Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Tiberias and
the Dead Sea.
Clal said the venture is in the
framework of its strategic plan to
enter the Israeli tourism field in
partnership with a world leader
in the sector.
Accor's 1993 turnover was $5.5
billion. The company manages
2,300 hotels in 130 countries,
1,200 of which are owned by Ac-
cor.
Imports soared in Israel from No-
vember through January as ex-
ports fell, more than doubling the
average monthly trade gap, the
Central Bureau of Statistics re-
ported.
Imports jumped 56.4 percent
in those three months as indus-
trial machinery and equipment
imports rose a sharp 72.6 percent
and industrial input imports in-
creased 53.3 percent. Similarly,
consumer imports expanded by
24.3 percent.
Durable imports — including
cars, furniture, refrigerators and
laundry machines — shot up 68
percent after falling 44 percent
in September and October.

By contrast, exports, excluding
diamonds, fell a steep 58.1
percent in November through
January after jumping 123
percent in the previous two
months.
Industrial exports, which
make up about one-third of in-
dustrial production, tumbled 36
percent following sharp drops in
September and October.
The trade gap — excluding di-
amonds, fuel, ships and aircraft
—averaged $660 million a month
from November through January
compared with $320 million a
