El Al Moves
To Privatization

The finest and most secure "setting for your child's Israel Experience.

Jerusalem (JTA) — El Al took a
major step toward privatization
when the airline's new board of
directors began officially operat-
ing.
The new board chairman, Yos-
si Cheihaover, was approved by
the finance minister and trans-
portation minister after another
candidate, Yossi Rosen, turned
down the job, citing a conflict of
interest.
The airline had been in re-
ceivership since 1982, after huge
losses caused by years of labor
disputes. The government at the
time ordered the closure of the
airline.
It reopened several months lat-
er under the authority of a court-
ordered receiver. In the past nine
years, the airline has turned prof-
its.
Although 1994 figures have yet
to be released, Israel Radio re-
ported that company officials ex-
pect a $10 million net profit with
record revenues of more than $1
billion.
The privatization plan calls for
a sale of 51 percent of the airline
on stock markets in Israel,
Britain and the United States lat-
er this year.

Jordan, Israel
Share Air Space

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel and
Jordan have reached an aviation
agreement, in which Jordanian
jets flying to and from Europe
may begin using Israeli air space
as of March 10. The agreement
by Israeli and Jordanian officials
was made at at the Red Sea re-
sort city of Eilat. The talks ce-
ment another part of the Oct. 26
peace treaty between the two
countries.
"It's a step that builds the
peace," Israel Transportation
Minister Yisrael Kessar said in a
statement.
The agreement applies only to
Royal Jordanian Airlines.
Mr. Kessar said other airlines
could fly over Israel en route to
Jordan if they first sought Israeli
approval.
During the Eilat talks, the
Israel-Jordan follow-up commit-
tee discussed establishing border
markers along the international
boundaries. Committees on
trade, economics and trans-
portation also met.
