MAXI'S FAMILY DINING
MIND-BOGGLING page 79
Ms. Dubin, who needs silence
to work, finds that she is most
productive in the day, when her
husband Larry teaches law at the
University of Detroit and does le-
gal analysis for Channel 2. Their L
son Nick attends Seaholm High
School.
"Before I started to write a
word for Change of Life, I planned
it," Ms. Dubin revealed. "I don't
mean just thinking about it. I not-
ed a lot of ideas, organized what
I wanted to do, got to know my
characters and developed the
structure. That took about three
months.
"The writing took another
five months, and then I had a
reading in my home with some
actors, a reading at JET before
an audience and another big
reading."
The rewrite process lasted two
years. After the first reading, she
learned that one of the characters
did not come across the way she
had thought, and more had to be
put into the script. After the read-
ing at JET, she realized that the
ending was not working and she
had to alter it.
"You really don't know these
things until you see and hear
them," the playwright said.
Active with the Birmingham
Temple, Ms. Dubin, who lived in
Ohio until she was married 25
years ago, seems to instinctive-
ly include Jewish characters in
her theater pieces. Their Jew-
ishness is manifested as cultur-
al characteristics, essentially
through the way they use lan-
guage.
Ms. Dubin has two agents in
charge of marketing her work —
one in New York and another in
California. She has plotted pilots
for TV series and hopes they
eventually will be produced.
"I want to keep writing," Ms.
Dubin said. "Every play I have
written has been produced, which
is amazing. Fve written some tele-
vision scripts, and I'd like to try
film. I'm attempting to broaden
my skills." El
