However, Rabbi Nevins warns
parents against putting their chil-
dren in the middle of a denomi-
national stand-off. Conversely,
children should remember the
mitzvot of honoring both parents,
regardless of their levels of ob-
servance, he says.
Judith and Martin Miller of
West Bloomfield belong to Tem-
ple Israel and Adat Shalom. The
Millers say they prefer to look be-
yond denominational lines.
"We consider ourselves a very
observant family that happens to
belong to a Reform temple and a
Conservative synagogue," Mrs.
Miller says.
Mrs. Miller deplores what she
calls "Jewish separatism." Re-
cently, she and her husband were
sitting in temple when they over-
heard Conservative visitors de-
nounce the Reform worship
service. On other occasions, the
Millers have heard Conservative
Jews refer to the Reform move-
ment as "bargain basement Ju-
daism."
"I have a real problem with
Jews who demean other Jews,"
Mrs. Miller says. "I grew up with
people making fun of me because
I belonged to Temple Israel."
Mrs. Miller's parents were
founding members of Temple Is
rael. Her husband's parents were
longtime members of Adat
Shalom.
"In our particular marriage, it
has never made a difference," she
says.
When it came to rearing chil-
dren, the Millers decided on a Re-
form education at Temple Israel.
They wanted their children's for-
mal Jewish training to reflect
their religious practices at home.
For instance, the Millers drive
on the Sabbath, but the Conser-
vative movement restricts driving
to trips back and forth from syn-
agogue.
"I didn't want to present my
children with an ideal they can't
live with," Mrs. Miller says. "I
didn't want to present them with
one thing (in school) and do an-
other (at home)."
All four Miller children at-
tended Temple Israel religious
school from their pre-kinder-
garten years through high-school
graduation. Today, they don't bog
themselves down with questions
of what's proper for this-or-that
denomination, Mrs. Miller says.
"They pick what's meaningful to
them." El
